Along the way, the lost but spirited dog meets a series of new friends and manages to bring a little bit of comfort and joy to their lives. The adventure of Bella, a dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human.
This is followed by the event when she helps two guys and another dog, Dutch, save their owner after an avalanche hits them. When the owner disowns them, the gay couple decides to take both Dutch and Bella in. This seems to be a test for Bella, who now has a comfortable home to stay in and even a friend to share her “soft spot” with.

Vengeful, Günter notifies animal control that Bella is a pitbull , because in Denver, pitbulls are illegal, due to being a dangerous breed. That evening, an overzealous animal control officer named Chuck comes by to warn Lucas that if he finds Bella on the street, he will impound her. So on paper, Charles Martin Smith’s talking dog movie “A Dog’s Way Home”, where a canine takes an utterly implausible two-year/400-mile journey to reunite with the human who saved him from the streets, is my basic nightmare. What dog parent wouldn’t like to believe our lost dogs would eventually find us at all costs, no matter what?

Bruce Cameron has marked his territory with uplifting dog stories. A Dog’s Way Home, the latest effort based on one of his books, lacks the thematic depth of its predecessor A Dog’s Purpose and is more strictly geared toward children. But dog lovers of all ages will warm up to its adventure tale about a plucky pooch who embarks on a 400-mile journey to get back home to his beloved owner. The film pretty much packs every canine cliché imaginable into its running time, but one look into the soulful eyes of its four-legged star will melt all but the coldest of hearts. Lucas Ray and his friend Olivia, two residents of Denver, Colorado, find a puppy in a construction site along with many kittens and a mother cat. He names the dog Bella and takes her home to live with him and his mother, Terri Ray.

For the lack of a better relatable film, imagine a feel-good Revenant without the backstabbing. The film makes use of natural adversities to test Bella’s love for Lucas, almost as if to prove that love is a force of nature too. It made $3.3 million on its first day, including $535,000 from Thursday night previews. It went on to have a debut of $11.3 million, finishing third at the box office, behind The Upside and holdover Aquaman.
Up next in the series I call Movies-I’m-Forced-To-See-Because-I-Have-A-Kid is A Dog’s Way Home. I did not choose to see this film, but I did, and it’s exactly what you’d expect it to be. It’s the story of a cute dog trying to find her way home symbolizing the bond between dogs and their owners. The Disney movie "Incredible Journey" was made a long time ago and this may have some similarities. But the story, filming, and constant adventure are all modern and will keep your interest.

Meanwhile Big Kitten is revealed to be a mother herself now and she and her cub watch over the city of Denver. I also wish the gay couple that Bella crosses paths with (a detail all too rare in hetero-normative mainstream family films) were allowed a bit more natural intimacy that a straight couple would have been free to display. After this, she encounters a baby cougar whose mother was shot by two hunters.
Leaving that aside, Smith’s film is still one you can’t help but root for, as the screenwriters Cathryn Michon and W. Bruce Cameron (also the author and scribe of the trilogy that includes “A Dog’s Purpose” and “A Dog’s Journey”) lovingly braid in numerous humanist themes into their tale at every turn. He keeps Bella on a leash and even chains her to prevent her from leaving his side. The fact that Axel passes away, leaving Bella chained to his lifeless body, seems to portray how such a kind of oppression can take its toll even after the person passes away.

After a point, such love becomes normal, and we are unable to come out of it, no matter how much it hurts us. Although it might be a stretch to categorise this as a movie, "A Dog's Way Home" is harmless enough and a nice little adventure that's fit for the whole family. How Bella is able to get back to Lucas is a testament to the fact that it is the journey that earns the destination its importance. And Bella’s journey only enriched her love for Lucas, making her, as well as us, understand the importance of togetherness, care, hope, survival, and a never-give-up attitude. The pack of homeless dogs symbolizes that sometimes people we do not know turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The dogs helped Bella by giving her companionship, accepting her as a member of their group, and sharing with her. Cleared payment cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab.
But her love for Lucas makes her give up comfort and hit the road. Sometimes, distance from the person we love can distance us from the love itself. We find solace in the fondness we find around us, which often contributes to the growing distance. However, Bella is adamant and holds on to the love she has for Lucas. She leaves Dutch in the couple’s care and hits the road. Hit the road right away when you want to see the person who means the world to us.
The next day, when Bella gets out to chase a squirrel, Lucas catches up to her and prepares to take her home, but Chuck confiscates Bella and takes her into the local animal shelter. Lucas picks Bella up, pays a fine, and is allowed to take her home, but he is warned that if Bella is captured again, she will be euthanized. To avoid this, Lucas sends Bella to live with Olivia's aunt and uncle in Farmington, New Mexico, until he and his mother can find another home outside of Denver's urban limits. However, Bella misses Lucas so much that she leaves Farmington and begins a 400-mile journey home, which will take more than two years to complete. During Bella's journey, she befriends a cougar cub, whom she names "Big Kitten." Bella and Big Kitten encounter many ordeals together, including being hunted by a pack of coyotes, but a group of men help Bella and frighten the coyotes away. The three men give Bella food at their campsite and upon learning who her owner is, try to call Lucas, only to be scared away by the sudden arrival of Big Kitten.
Lucas prepares to take Bella to the vet to treat an injury Bella received due to being struck by a car, but when Lucas, Terri, and Lucas's friends bring Bella outside, Chuck arrives with several police officers, including police captain Mica. Chuck claims that he needs to confiscate Bella again, with the threat to have Lucas and anyone who interferes arrested otherwise. Captain Mica allows Lucas to keep Bella as he has no jurisdiction. Lucas and Olivia are happy to see Bella again and finally manage to move into a house in Golden, where they allow pitbulls.
“A Dog’s Way Home” is a compelling dog film that uses man’s best friend to uphold cross-species friendship and has its heart in the right place, pretty much like every canine of every breed. Bella’s journey to Lucas is no less than a journey of life, and no matter how much we deny it, life is all about letting go. Throughout Bella’s journey, she makes new friends, learns to survive, and she grows, not just physically but emotionally as well.
